We have begun our reading journey! Students have learned the names for parts of books (cover, title, author, illustrator, spine etc). They have also been learning how to care for the books they read. The students are really enjoying looking at new books. We have also listened to so many great books.
Writing Workshop
In writing, we are working on some directed draw and labeling lessons. We noticed that the books we read have pictures and words. As writers, we need to include pictures and words to the stories that we write. As a class, we thought about simple things like bees and bats to write about. We closed our eyes and pictured what we are going to write about. Together we worked to illustrate a picture part by part. Then we worked on labeling our pictures.
Word Work
This week we started to look at our own names. We named the letters in our names. Then we cut apart our names and worked to put them together again.
Math Workshop
Each day, we begin our math workshop with some calendar activities. We use the calendar to name the day’s date. We talk about what day of the week it is, what yesterday was, and what tomorrow will be. We then add a straw to our wall to count the number of days we have been in school. Students had a chance to explore some of the different math manipulatives that we use during our math workshop. Students rotated between groups to explore, dice, counters, pattern blocks, etc. We played a roll and cover game.
Social Studies
Students have learned how to play outside on the playground and inside the classroom.
