Reading Workshop
This week, we finished up our reading unit on nonfiction text. Students worked on looking for new facts as well as thinking about what they already knew about their topics. Students worked to think about what the author was teaching in books and parts of books. We identified many of the text features that belong in nonfiction reading. Next week, we will begin a unit called Readers are Resourceful. In this unit, e will be tackling hard words and the tricky parts in books.
Writing Workshop
Students are writing up a storm about all the things they know about. We are working on adding more than one sentence on a page to tell even more about our topics. We are organizing them like the books we just read in our reading unit. Students are trying to keep like information together.
Word Work
Snap words taught this year: I, a, the, is, my, on, we, see, and, by, like, it, look, you, me, we, you, has, he, she, went, to, go, here, come, they, in, was, got, are, all, by, big, be, come, down, got, have, little, was
Students have been taught diagraphs: sh, ch, ck, th, wh. These sounds are common in the books that they are reading now.
We are also working on listening to the ending sounds of words, blending onset rhyme ie /b/ - /at/ make bat, segmenting sounds ie say bat now tell all the sounds you hear /b/ /a/ /t/, and blending sounds to make words ie /b/ /a/ /t/ makes the word bat. You can practice these skills at home as well as use the following websites for fun.

Math Workshop
We are now working with teen numbers. Students are learning to recognize a teen number as a group of ten with some left over.
Each day, students are rotating through the classroom to 4 math stations. At each station, they are working on an activity reinforcing what we are learning and practicing and keeping up with old skills.
Things to do at home:
Practice number combinations to 5. Ex. 1 and 4, 3 and 2.
Practice number combinations to 10. Ex. 8 and 2, 7 and 3.
To practice number combinations, use beads, cereal, pasta etc, pen and paper, flash cards, memory recall.
Play War - winner can have greater or less than number. Before winner takes the cards, they need to say 8 is greater than 6.
Counting to 100
Counting backward from 20
Count by tens to 100
Count on or backward from a given number not 1 or 10. Example count on starting at 7 or count backward from 13.

Tippy was a great addition to our classroom. Students loved caring for Tippy. What a great opportunity and we hope you go visit Tippy at the Ray of Light Farm in East Haddam.
