Reading Workshop
This week, students have finished their first reading unit! We will continue to “read” our old favorite storybooks but also begin our journey into more conventional reading! Our next unit is called Reading Superpowers. I will teach children tips and tricks that we call superpowers to help them read words! Please return books the next day! If a book does not come back, a new one cannot.
Things to do at home:
Read books coming home in folders
Writing Workshop
Students also finished their first unit in writing! We will begin next week by looking closely and writing like scientists. We will go for a walk outside to collect artifacts of fall. Please feel free to bring in a few things from home that you find in your own yards: acorns, pine cones, leaves, etc.
Things to do at home:
Word Work and Phonemic Awareness Skills
This week, students learned 2 new letters.
C cat /c/
O octopus /o/
Taught letters: t, b, f, n, m, i, u, c, o
Things to do at home:
Practice letter recognition, sound, and handwriting formation
Rhyme - identify and generate
Listen for first sounds in words and identify multiple words that start with the same sound

Math Workshop
Students continued to explore numbers 1-5. Students learned to slide and touch objects when counting to ensure accuracy. Students also worked on counting objects in a round formation but placing an object or making a mark on a starting object to be sure it does not get counted more than once.

Count a group of objects to ten

We had some apple fun when we celebrated Johnny Appleseed’s birthday. Students made applesauce and observed and taste tested red, green , and yellow apples. We have tentatively booked a field trip to Belltown Hill Orchards in South Glastonbury for October 22. Info will come home when all is confirmed.
