Today we talked about nouns (person, place or object) and verbs (action words) in Readers Workshop. In many of our books the picture tells us that someone is doing something. We can think "What is going on in this picture? Who is doing what?" to help us figure out tricky words. During small groups we built sentences. first we sorted out all of the nouns--that was easy because they have a picture-- and the verbs which had a green stripe on the top. Each noun had to have a "The" or an "A" in front of it or else the puzzle would not fit together properly.
We had create time today with straws, marshmallows, drinnk stirrers, toilet paper rolls and a scarce resource--TAPE! Children worked with stamina and perseverance. They worked through many iterations of their ideas. Lots of things didn't work and the children supported each other and coached each other through the frustrations and tricky parts.
