Our Week In Review
Monday: Pumpkin, Pumpkin! We enjoyed reading Pumpkin Heads! We read about how a pumpkin grows. We wrote some facts about pumpkins. We are working on noticing that there are spaces between words on the page. We are practicing saying a sentence and seeing if we can determine how many words are in the sentence. In computer we typed our names in Microsoft Word. We are learning where the letters are on the keyboard. Thank you to Rachel for bringing some new balloons.
Tuesday: We observed the pumpkins really closely so we could be scientists. First we talk about our observations then we can write about them. We really thought about the different colors that the pumpkins were and used words like bumpy, smooth, small, big, round. We are working on handwriting the letters, c,o and a. Those are tricky! In math we put 5 buttons onto a pipe cleaner. We hid some under one hand and looked at how many we could see. We used math language to discuss what we saw – 3 and 2 more is 5. We are learning how to read back to back with our reading partner.
Wednesday: Today we did an up close drawing of a part of the pumpkin. The green one has an unusual stem. We did handwriting the numbers 6 and 7 in our book about numbers. We had Alphabet Extravaganza with Mrs. Henderson in the afternoon. We got to do lots of different letter sort activities. The long letter mat in the hallway for three kids is a favorite.
Thursday: We read Skeleton Hiccups today. It’s a crack me up book—the kind you read because it cracks you up! We sorted out cards into a number line 0-10. We did beautiful portraits of the pumpkins. They are on the bulletin board. We are remembering to label our drawing.
Friday: Today we had Free Friday Write. That’s a favorite! We have been practicing writing our names in perfect kindergarten handwriting. We are getting so much better! We read In 1492, a book about Christopher Columbus. We talked about the different ways we can be outside explorers—we can explore a new hiking trail with our family, or a new fishing place, or new rocks to climb. We read Llama, llama, Mad at Mama and talked about what happens to us when we get dragged out to do errands (don’t worry families! They were all very positive in their discussion!). The children felt that Llama, Llama should not have gotten a treat after errands because he threw such a big hissy fit. Happy Birthday to Sebastian.
Have a wonderful long weekend!
