Today we learned about one of the most celebrated Hindu holidays, Diwali. It is most referred to as The Festval of Lights. We started our day by looking at some Rangoli designs that are often drawn in doorways for good luck. The class then colored some of their own Rangoli designs. During Diwali may sweets are exchanged. I brought in some Gulab Jamun for the kids to try. We were pretty split as to whether we liked it or not! In honor on the Festival of Lights, we made our own lanterns. In India, little clay pots are lit and left around buildings and windows. i stressed up in traditional Selwar!

Reading Workshop This week, students learned to focus on the exact words found at the beginnings of stories and used those words when they begin their reading. For example, “Once there was a peddler who . . .” or “Not so long ago, before she could speak words . . . “ Students have also worked on finding the trouble in stories and payed close attention as to how those problems got solved. Students are working on continuing to say more and more on each page. They can focus on dialogue, characters feelings, and use exact action words to say more.
Writing Workshop We are continuing to work on writing like scientists. Students learned to look closely at objects to get all the details. We have been practicing using scientific vocabulary like vein, stem etc instead of thing, or mark. Partners have been working together to share and collect ideas from each other. Writers have been very careful to capture exactly what they see. If a leaf has a hole in it, then you must show that hole in your drawing and label it. Continue to send in any great objects you find! Math Workshop We have finished up our unit on counting and cardinality in numbers 0 to 3. Students have learned how to count objects in a line using their fingers, count objects in a group by moving each object to a new pile while counting, and how to mark a starting point so you know where you started counting when objects are in a circular formation. Students worked on finding missing parts within 3. Example if I know there are 3 of something, and I am holding 2, the missing part is 1. We will be moving on to counting and cardinality using numbers 4-6. Word Work We have learned how to properly form and make the sound associated with the letters d and s. d - dog /d/ and s- snake /s/ Letters: t, b, f, m, n, i, u, c, o, a, g, d, s Snap Words: I, a, the, to, it, see ScienceStudents have had so much fun learning about apples. We have done several experiments with apples. Students made predictions as to whether they thought apples would sink or float. We taste tested several apple varieties to see what our favorites was. Students carefully examined the insides of apples and even used apples to paint. We have read books to see how the grow. Social StudiesStudents have been learning all about October holidays. A big thank you to the Broder family who came into class to talk about Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. We read a book about the adventures of Christopher Columbus. I will be sharing about the Hindu festival Diwali/Deepavali at the end of the month. We will also have lots of Halloween fun as October moves along. The Haddam Volunteer Fire Department came today to teach fire safety! The students learned how to call 911, be sure to have a safe meeting spot outside in the event of an emergency, stop, drop, and roll, all about fire safety gear, and most importantly to be sure you have working smoke detectors in your home! Smoke detectors should be replaced every 10 years!!!
Cooper's parents came to teach us about Rosh Hashanah! They read a great story that explained how to celebrate and brought apples and honey and challah bread to share! Shanah Tovah! Happy new year!
Storybook Character DayWe invited our second grade buddies to read with us! tThen we went on a parade through the school!
Reading Workshop This week, we learned that when you go back to reread a storybook, you remember more and more of the story, which means we can say more on each page. If there are a lot of words on the page, then there’s a lot of story to tell. We also learned that we can sound more grown up by making the words on the pages go together by using transition words, first, and then, finally. Reading a book over and over again allows us to try to use some of the exact words from the book. Some of the words, especially the words that repeat, become words that we can know by heart. They become words that we can say exactly like the the book says them. We even practiced finding those exact words and pointing to and reading some of them!
Writing Workshop This week, we began to tell true stories. Students had to begin thinking about things that they did or things that happened to them. We practiced telling our stories using our best storytelling voice. Students then planned out their stories by touching and saying what they planned to write on each blank page of a booklet. Then they went off to write down their own stories. Some of us are adding more and more labels and even trying to add a sentence to tell about our pictures! Our partners helped us by giving us a tip to make our stories better or a compliment our writing. Math Workshop We began our new math unit on counting and cardinality in numbers 0 to 3. Students learned that once you have counted a group of objects in a vertical column and rotate it horizontally, that you still have the same amount of objects! There is no need to recount since you did not add or take any away (conservation of number). Students used a math tool called a Rekenrek and learned how to decompose 3 into groups like 1 and 2 is 3. We also learned the meaning of zero through exploration. Students learned how to write the numerals 0-3. You can practice this skill at home! Word Work We have learned how to properly form and make the sound associated with the letters i and u. i - itch /i/ and u- up /u/ Letters: t b, f, m, n, i, u Snap Words: I, a, the, to Important Dates10/10 – NO SCHOOL - Columbus Day 10/11 – Book Fair 10/12 – NO SCHOOL – Yom Kippur 10/13 – PTO: Mystery Read Night – Cafeteria 6-7 pm 10/13 – Book Fair (open 6:00-7:30pm) 10/14 – Book Fair 10/19 – Early Dismissal/ Teacher’s PD 10/21 – PTO: BOTS!
