Reading Workshop
Students have been using their newfound superpowers to read books. Students have learned they have:
Things to do at home: Read books coming home in folders and return folders and books daily! Writing Workshop Students have been very busy writing like scientists. They have been working on using expert words to tell more. On Thursday, students learned they can make books to tell even more about their findings. Things to do at home: Find things and help discuss what you notice about size, color, texture, shape, etc. Word Work and Phonemic Awareness Skills This week, students learned 2 new letters. d - dog /d/ s -snake /s/ Taught letters: t, b, f, n, m, i, u, c, o, a, g, d, s Snap words: I, a, see, the, at, like, look Things to do at home: Practice letter recognition, sound, and handwriting formation Rhyme - identify and generate Listen for first sounds in words and identify multiple words that start with the same sound Syllables in words Math Workshop Students continued to work on listening to math stories and worked on finding ways to solve them. This week, we focused on subtraction stories. Example: There were 3 bears in the woods. 2 bears are left. How many bears are still in the woods? Things to do at home: Write numbers 1-5 You can rote count to ten or beyond Count a group of objects to ten Field Trip Remember that students will need a bag lunch for the field trip. If possible, please pack lunches in brown bags and try not to pack plastic containers. It would be easiest if all that was sent can be thrown away when finished! Important Dates 10/21: Community Flu Clinic at Burr 2:00-6:00pm 10/22: Field Trip to Belltown Hill Orchards 10/23: Early Dismissal - Parent/Teacher Conferences 10/24: Early Dismissal - Parent/Teacher Conferences 10/31: Halloween Parade 2:15pm and class celebration to follow parade Today students from Mrs. Lonergan’s class came over to celebrate their scientific writing. Students each shared their writing and helped each other to revise and edit their work. It was a great writing session!
Students went to the book fair to shop. On Thursday, students will have the opportunity to purchase books.
Reading Workshop
This week, students have finished their first reading unit! We will continue to “read” our old favorite storybooks but also begin our journey into more conventional reading! Our next unit is called Reading Superpowers. I will teach children tips and tricks that we call superpowers to help them read words! Please return books the next day! If a book does not come back, a new one cannot. Things to do at home: Read books coming home in folders Writing Workshop Students also finished their first unit in writing! We will begin next week by looking closely and writing like scientists. We will go for a walk outside to collect artifacts of fall. Please feel free to bring in a few things from home that you find in your own yards: acorns, pine cones, leaves, etc. Things to do at home: Word Work and Phonemic Awareness Skills This week, students learned 2 new letters. C cat /c/ O octopus /o/ Taught letters: t, b, f, n, m, i, u, c, o Things to do at home: Practice letter recognition, sound, and handwriting formation Rhyme - identify and generate Listen for first sounds in words and identify multiple words that start with the same sound Syllables in words Math Workshop Students continued to explore numbers 1-5. Students learned to slide and touch objects when counting to ensure accuracy. Students also worked on counting objects in a round formation but placing an object or making a mark on a starting object to be sure it does not get counted more than once. Things to do at home: Write numbers 1-5 You can rote count to ten or beyond Count a group of objects to ten Science We had some apple fun when we celebrated Johnny Appleseed’s birthday. Students made applesauce and observed and taste tested red, green , and yellow apples. We have tentatively booked a field trip to Belltown Hill Orchards in South Glastonbury for October 22. Info will come home when all is confirmed. Parent-Teacher Conferences I will send out a signup via SignUp Genius early next week. Parent conferences will be held the week of October 21. Students peeled, cored, and sliced their own apples. We then turned our apples into yummy applesauce! Students observed and then taste tested red, green, and yellow apples! Red apples were a fan favorite! Students celebrated their new found live of books and reading by dressing up like the characters in their books. We paraded around the school for all the grades to see! Students worked on making their favorite writing story the very best it could be! In Second Strps we working in focusing and listening! Students fit together with their second grade buddies to share their favorite stories! We will do lots of fun things together throughout the year!
