After the assembly, Liam's dad and mom came back to the classroom to share pictures, answer questions and talk about their experiences with the Marines. The girls and boys learned a lot and got a better idea of why they were off from school the next day!
On Thursday, November 10, Burr School had an assembly to honor our veterans. From our class, Daniel's grandfather, Riley's grandfather and Liam's dad attended. Before the assembly, the veterans were treated to a festive breakfast with a chance to spend time with their children, grandchildren and friends and other veterans. Mr. Larson welcomed everyone, especially the veterans and thanked them for all their years of service. At the assembly some upper grade students sang some patriotic songs and read some special essays. Some staff members read Eve Bunting's book The Wall while some girls and boys acted it out. Mr. Larson named all the veterans and had them stand to be recognized. It was a very moving assembly! THANK YOU VETERANS!!!! After the assembly, Liam's dad and mom came back to the classroom to share pictures, answer questions and talk about their experiences with the Marines. The girls and boys learned a lot and got a better idea of why they were off from school the next day! The girls and boys made cards for the veterans and either gave them to a veteran who came to Burr or brought it home to give to a veteran in their family or to a veteran friend!!!! THANK YOU VETERANS!!!!

Reading Workshop
What an awesome week to be a reader! Students began a new unit on reading superpowers. Over the next few weeks, we will learn some new powers to help us read conventionally! This week, Reader Man, visited the class and left us pointer sticks. The pointer sticks help us to point to the words on the page. We practiced using our pointer power all week! We know that each word only gets one tap, no matter how long it is! Students learned that we can make our pointer power even stronger by pointing to a word and recognizing it as a snap word and then reading it in a snap! You will all be amazed very soon at your little readers!!!!! Writing Workshop We have gone back to writing narrative stories about the things that happened to us or things we did. Always good to brainstorm some ideas at home so students have lots and lots of writing ideas. Have them practice telling you about those special memories orally. Over the next few weeks, we will be working to make our writing easy to read. We have learned that to be easy to read, we need: neat pictures, spaces between letters and words, lots and lots of letters to match the sounds we hear, and to not make too many cross outs. Our writing gets better and better each day! Math Workshop This week, we have been learning if numbers are more or less than other numbers. We have been using five frames to represent a given number. A five frame is a box with five empty boxes in a row. We can place various manipulatives in those boxes to represent numbers 0-6 . Lining up numbers in the five frame and with some under helps us to see “who has more” If there is a line of objects that is longer or does not have a “partner” than it is more. Example 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 Word Work We have learned how to properly form and make the sound associated with the letters v and w. Sight words: can v - van /v/ w- wind /w/ Letters: t, b, f, m, n, i, u, c, o, a, g, d, s, e, r, p, j, l, h, k, v,w Snap Words: I, a, the, to, it, see, you, and, we, can Social Studies We have been learning all about Thanksgiving and what it means to be thankful. Students met up with their second grade buddies in Mrs. Harkin’s room, and made a thankful tree. It is on display in the front showcase by the office. We have been making some crafts that will help make our Thanksgiving feast super special. Thank you to all the families who have signed up to bring in food items. You can still sign up! Also don’t forget $2.00 for pizza! You are all welcome to join us for our feast! The date is Nov. 22 at 12:30 - 1:30. Important Dates 11/22 Classroom Feast 11/23- Early Dismissal for students and staff 11/24 & 11/25- Thanksgiving Recess Today we celebrated the 50th day of K!!! We colored, raced to 50 in math, and colored 50 circles! In reading, Super Teacher dropped by to explain how to use our first Super Power to read. We learned to point to words and read them. We read the room and then familiar poems and songs.
Reading Workshop We will be finishing up reading our beloved emergent story books this week! We learned that we can compare the characters in the stories we read to see how they are similar and different. Students have been working on adding more to their conversations with partners by explaining WHY - why are you happy, sad, mad, or why do you like or dislike this part in the story.
Writing Workshop We will also be finishing up writing like scientists this week. We picked a favorite piece to fancy up and share with others. Math Workshop We practiced memorizing the dot formations on a dice so when we roll a dice, we don’t need to count each dot to know what number we rolled. Students worked on cardinality skills by playing a counting game. They were using numbers up to 6. We continued to work with the language of number stories. Students worked on building and acting out number stories like this: There were 2 dogs. 2 more dogs came. How many dogs in all? Word Work We have learned how to properly form and make the sound associated with the letters l, h, and k. Sight words: we l - lamp /l/ h- hat /h/ and k- kite /k/ Letters: t, b, f, m, n, i, u, c, o, a, g, d, s, e, r, p, j, l, h, k Snap Words: I, a, the, to, it, see, you, and, we Science We ate roasted pumpkin seeds and fresh pumpkin pie! Social Studies We talked about Veterans. We learned a song called See the Veteran. We made cards for some local veterans in a VA hospital and cards for veterans who came to Burr to help us learn and celebrate Veteran’s Day. Important Dates 11/11- Veteran’s Day- no school for students and staff 11/22 Classroom Feast 11/23- Early Dismissal for students and staff 11/24 & 11/25- Thanksgiving Recess Today we read Turkey Trouble by Wendi Silvano. In the story, Turkey does NOT want to get eaten for the Thanksgiving Feast. He tries to disguise himself as other farm animals so he can elude Farmer Jake. In the end, he runs out of costume ideas and hides. He is afraid his dear friend Rooster might end up as the main dish. In a last ditch effort, he comes up with ONE more costume idea. He dresses up as the pizza delivery boy. The family agrees that pizza sounds like a great idea and they all sit down to feast!
We are already getting crafty and disguising a turkey so WHY not feast like Farmer Jake’s family too!!! On Tuesday, November 22, Room 14 will be feasting together. We will have the usual turkey trimmings and . . . pizza! We will be making cranberry sauce, pumpkin muffins, mashed potatoes, and sweet potato casserole. I will be looking for volunteers to send in some goodies. I will create a signup genius for the below items so be on the look-out for that!
Bag of large marshmallows
Over the weekend, I roasted the pumpkin seeds from our class pumpkin. I also roasted and puréed the pumpkin flesh. I turned the pumpkin into a yummy crustless pumpkin pie! We added some whipped cream for a yummy treat! I am so amazed and impressed with our adventures eaters in this class. Some did not want to try it or were a tad reluctant but all did! Some even surprised themselves! It was quite tasty I must say!
We started out our day with a treat! Vampire donuts!!! Mmmm Then we had a little fun in the science lab! We made Frankenworms! Aka gummi worms that wiggled and giggled in solution! The parade! And the party!
