After reading Turkey Trouble, we decided to turn our Thanksgiving Feast into a pizza party! We had pizza, mashed potatoes, peas, cornbread, and pumpkin bread, which the class made together! We even made our own butter to put on top! Students also made headbands and placemats! Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Students will be coming home with a hundreds chart. Keep it and practice counting. We colored the numbers that end in 9 yellow to caution us to stop and think sbout what 10 comes next. Use chart to count to 100, count by tens, identify which number comes after a number that ends in 9, count backward etc!!!
Reading Workshop
This week, worked on making our stories come to life. Once we know the pattern, we can almost sing our stories. Using punctuation also helps us to bring our books to life. We learned about ., ?, and !. How to help: Read a page or two to your child and see if they can continue to read the rest of the book. Writing Workshop This week, students worked on studying sentences. We noticed that sentences have capital letters to start, lowercase letters, spaces between words, and punctuation at the end. Students used lots of sight words to write sentences. How to help: Discuss places that you have gone. Ex. beach, store, Disney, New York etc. Practice where, who and what happened into complete sentences. Practice reading and writing sight words. Word Work This week, we learned how to write and make the sound for the letters v and w. V-van /v/ W - wind /w/ I am sending home a complete list of K sight words. You can introduce words as you wish. New sight words: can How to help: You can practice naming all the letters below, making the sounds, and writing the lowercase letter. Taught letters: t, b, f, n, m, i, u, c, o, a, g, d, s, e, r, p, j, l, h, v, w Taught sight words: a, is, my, I, see, like, look, at, the, can, How to help: Read and write sight words! Math Workshop Students took an assessment on units 1 and 2. How to help: Count to 30 Count backward from 20 Count on or backward from a different number other than 1 Write numbers 1 -5 Count a group of objects Social Studies We talked about Veterans Day. We are continuing to learn about what life was like a long time ago during the first Thanksgiving. Feast - We will be having our Thanksgiving feast on Wednesday. You are welcome to join. Just let me know if you plan to attend. We will be ordering pizza for our feast. Sent in $3.00 to cover pizza and the cost of some other supplies to make our feast complete. If your child does not eat pizza, please let me know. You can bring in your own lunch or eat the fixings that will be served! \Science We learned how animas take safety from the sun’s rays. We made braceets with UV beads to show how the sun’s rays are strong even on a not so sunny day. Important Dates 11/20- BOE meeting- 7:00 p.m. 11/21- Early Dismissal for Staff and Students- 1:05 p.m. 11/22 & 11/23- Thanksgiving Recess Students made a solution of baking soda and water and soaked gumi worms in it. Then the gumi worms were dropped into vinegar. It was so fun to watch them dance around!!!
On Wednesday, we celebrated Diwali , the Indian Festival of Lights. We read a book, looked at Rangoli, colored our own Rangoli, and made our very own diyas, lanterns! We went outside to make some fall observations. We looked at the tree we picked out in summer and noted all the fall changes. Students drew and colored pictures of our tree in fall! Today the school honored our veterans with a lovely assembly! Kindergarten made cards for those who came. We were even visited by Mrs. Bombaci, a former teacher of mine and Becky Harkin, the teacher of our buddy classroom! She shared a little bit about how our cards and projects get to the soldiers oveesseas and how much joy they bring! We even got to see how her amazing service dog works in action! The dog is deaf and knows commands through sign language! The kids really enjoyed her visit!!

Math Workshop Students are learning about flat shapes like circles, triangles, squares, rectangles, and hexagons. Students are using words like sides, corners, points, or vertices to describe those shapes. Students are recognizing what is similar and different about shapes. Students also learned how to solve more complex and open ended number stories that can have more than one correct answer. How to help: Count to 30 Count backward from 20 Count on or backward from a different number other than 1 Write numbers 1 -5 Count a group of objects Make flat shapes and make them look different. i.e. longer sides on a rectangle or triangle. Science We have been talking about how to stop the spread of germs by keeping our hands clean. We talked about proper hand washing and when we need to wash hands.
