Writing Workshop We are continuing to work on writing like scientists. Students learned to look closely at objects to get all the details. We have been practicing using scientific vocabulary like vein, stem etc instead of thing, or mark. Partners have been working together to share and collect ideas from each other. Writers have been very careful to capture exactly what they see. If a leaf has a hole in it, then you must show that hole in your drawing and label it. Continue to send in any great objects you find!
Math Workshop
We have finished up our unit on counting and cardinality in numbers 0 to 3. Students have learned how to count objects in a line using their fingers, count objects in a group by moving each object to a new pile while counting, and how to mark a starting point so you know where you started counting when objects are in a circular formation. Students worked on finding missing parts within 3. Example if I know there are 3 of something, and I am holding 2, the missing part is 1. We will be moving on to counting and cardinality using numbers 4-6.
Word Work
We have learned how to properly form and make the sound associated with the letters d and s.
d - dog /d/ and s- snake /s/
Letters: t, b, f, m, n, i, u, c, o, a, g, d, s
Snap Words: I, a, the, to, it, see
ScienceStudents have had so much fun learning about apples. We have done several experiments with apples. Students made predictions as to whether they thought apples would sink or float. We taste tested several apple varieties to see what our favorites was. Students carefully examined the insides of apples and even used apples to paint. We have read books to see how the grow.
Social StudiesStudents have been learning all about October holidays. A big thank you to the Broder family who came into class to talk about Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. We read a book about the adventures of Christopher Columbus. I will be sharing about the Hindu festival Diwali/Deepavali at the end of the month. We will also have lots of Halloween fun as October moves along.
