New Year’s Resolutions
Happy New Year! Hope you are all having a great start to the new year. Students came back from break and made new year’s resolutions. We thought hard about what we can do to be a better friend or something we wanted to get better at.
Reading Workshop
We began a new unit called Bigger Books, Bigger Reading Muscles. In this unit, we are really working to fine tune those superpowers we learned about in the last unit. We are giving ourselves extra strength powers to read the new and tricky words in our books.
Writing Workshop
We started a new writing unit called How to Writing. We are having so much fun sharing and teaching about the things we know how to do. You can help at home by brainstorming things that your student can do like, brush teeth, go to bed, make cereal, make a sandwich, etc. Work together to talk about those experiences and put those events in order!
Math Workshop
In math, we are working on finishing up our counting and cardinality units with learning about 9 and 10. Students have been making number combinations of 9 and 10 ie 4 and 5 is 9, and 6 and 4 is 10.
Word Work
Students have now learned how to make all the uppercase letters correctly. We will continue to work on letter formation the whole year. We are also continuing the work of blending sounds togetner and taking those sound apart. You can do these exerciese orally together at home. Just use any CVC word (hat, bun, pen, hit, mop,)
Segmenting Example
Say mat - name each sound you hear.
Thumb to pointer finger- /m/
Thumb to middle finger - /a/
Thumb to ring finger - /t/
Slide fingers together to say mat
Blending Example
Say /c/, /a/, /t/
Student response should be the whole word cat
You can also work on listening and identifying the first and last sound in any CVC word.
