A new type of books will be coming home in folders! Students went shopping for books this week. Each student picked 10 books from our leveled library. Students are working on pointing to one word and reading one word one to one matching. This week students learned to combine powers. They learned that using pointer power and picture power is very helpful when reading stories. Today, students learned how to use sound power to figure out words. Looking at the first letter of a word can be a big clue!
Writing Workshop
Students continued to learn how to write like scientists. We have been reading lots of non fiction books to learn as much as we can. We are focusing on using scientific words to tell about the things we write. For example leaves have veins and the insides of pumpkins have pulp. We went for a nature walk to collect cool things to write about. Students are working on telling about their objects, not the stories behind them. Students are labeling their pictures and even writing sentences to tell more.
Word Work
Letters of the week:
d - dog -/d/
s - snake - /s/

Math Workshop
We are continuing to work on counting, cardinality, and decomposing numbers 1-5. This week, we learned how to draw pictures to match story problems. Students learned to draw like mathematicians, quick and fast, not like artists with exact detail. We are continuing to count forward and backward. We have even been working on counting starting at a different number other than 1! Reading teen numbers is tricky! You can practice at home.
Social Studies and Science
This week, we took a nature walk to look for signs of fall. We have read many books to help learn the science behind fall. We cut open a pumpkin to explore the insides. We also conducted an experiment to see if a pumpkin would float or sink. Many of us were surprised to see that pumpkins float!
On Thursday, I taught the class about the Indian holiday of Diwali. Students ate a traditional Indian sweet often served at Diwali.
