What an amazing time we had visiting the nature center at Hammonnasset last week! We got to learn about sea creatures and even touch them in the touch tank. We learned all about turtles, too. Did you know that there is one species of turtles that can climb trees?! After a yummy picnic lunch, we got to explore the beach! Thanks to all of the volunteers who came to join us! And thanks to Jamie Sciascia for the great pictures! (I'm having trouble getting my pics from my phone to my webpage, so stay tuned for more and for Mother's Day pictures as well!!
Wow! We have a new appreciation for that tasty topping now that Hannah's mom came and taught us all about how to tap trees and use the sap to make maple syrup! We learned how to identify a maple tree, how and when to tap it, the way the sap comes out and is collected into buckets and that you have to boil the sap to make maple syrup! She read a great story and showed us lots of pictures. She even let us pretend to be maple trees to show how long it takes to collect sap! Don't be surprised if we start searching our yards for maple trees! Thanks, Mrs. Taiclet!
What a great visit we had from Ms. Bonnie and Ms. Ev and their furry, and not so furry, friends form the Ray of Light Farm in East Haddam! They shared a video about their farm, talked about what horses need to live and grow. Next we got to meet Tippy the tortoise and his much larger tortoise friend. We leaned about what they eat, how long they live and how big they can get. Did you know that their tortoise, Stella weighs over 100lbs?! After that, we got to visit with 3 adorable guinea pigs. They chomped on some lettuce and skittered around a bit. Then we got to pet them! Ms. Bonnie and Ms. Ev talked to us a lot about the animals and how to care for them. It's a good thing, too, because Tippy is coming to stay with us in the classroom for the rest of the week! We are SO excited!!! Thanks to all who offered donations for us to give to them to put towards their farm! Check out these cool pictures from their visit!
